A satin lining in bright red
To make a gardian jacket that respects traditions, the palatine velvet must necessarily be black. On this garment, the black velvet is also paired with a red satin lining.
This lining first adds a touch of color to the garment, but it also serves a practical purpose. It makes the jacket slide more easily over the skin and other clothing (for example the gardian shirt or the gardian vest). This makes the jacket easier to put on and provides greater freedom of movement. The lining also helps prevent repeated friction of the velvet and seams against the skin, adding an extra level of comfort.
This combination of black palatine velvet and red satin lining gives rise to an authentic gardian jacket that is elegant, durable, and warm.

When to wear the traditional Camargue jacket?
Like the other pieces of the gardian outfit, the wearing of the traditional jacket was initiated by Marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon. Since the early 20th century, it has been worn by gardians and manadiers on important occasions. It has also become a symbol of Camargue customs.
In certain circumstances, the wearing of the Camargue jacket is regulated by the 2008 gardian dress code charter. Its use is particularly recommended for official ceremonies. It can be worn over a colored shirt (for formal ceremonies) or a white shirt (for weddings or funerals). The traditional gardian vest is also allowed under the jacket.
Note that the gardian dress code does not necessarily require wearing the jacket in summer. For some ceremonies held during the summer period, it is sometimes even discouraged depending on the temperature. Indeed, it is a warm garment, notably due to the palatine velvet. In autumn, winter, and early spring, the black velvet jacket is perfectly suited to all gardian ceremonies and gatherings.
