Traditional Camargue gardian pants - Vincent et Mireille

Traditional Camargue gardian pants

The authentic gardian pants!

The heavy moleskin gardian pants are the traditional workwear of the Camargue gardian. They are worn both by the manadiers (owners of the manades in Camargue) and by the gardians themselves (herders of Camargue bulls). These unisex pants are particularly robust and resistant to wear caused by friction.

The emblematic pants of Camargue

With their straight traditional cut and black piping along the legs, these are the authentic Camargue pants. The most emblematic piece of the Camargue gardian outfit, Vincent et Mireille pants reflect a strong cultural heritage.

Renowned in the Arles region for their strength, Vincent et Mireille gardian pants continue to appeal to the most fervent defenders of tradition and the bull culture. Worn by several generations of Camargue riders, they embody cultural heritage and symbolize the preservation of Delta du Rhône customs.

When to wear traditional Camargue pants?

The Camargue pants are an inseparable part of the traditional gardian outfit. In general, they are worn during the daily activities of both gardians and manadiers, as they are above all work pants.

Beyond daily work in the manades, they are required for various occasions linked to Camargue traditions, in line with the Marquis’ wishes in the 2008 gardian dress code charter.

Camargue pants must especially be worn during official and ceremonial occasions (Fête des Gardians), where the gardian outfit is required to honor tradition with dignity.

At more intimate events such as weddings and funerals, it is also customary to wear the traditional Camargue pants.

Moleskin - the preferred fabric of Camargue pants

According to the wishes of Marquis Folco de Baroncelli, founder of the Nation Gardiane and initiator of the gardian dress code charter, the traditional pants of the Camargue gardian must be in moleskin. Moleskin is what we call a textile weave. Derived from the satin weave, it was once called "mole skin," because of its reinforced weft and brushed back, which gave it the appearance and texture of mole fur.

Moleskin is known for its extreme durability, making it a fabric of choice for workwear, especially pants. Today, different compositions of moleskin exist for traditional Camargue pants, meeting the needs and requirements of each rider.

The different types of moleskin used in making gardian pants

All our models are traditional, durable, and comfortable. However, the fabric can emphasize one of these three qualities more strongly. We invite you to discover in detail the properties of the different types of moleskin used in our Camargue pants.

Gardian pants in traditional cotton moleskin

100% cotton

Traditional moleskin is made entirely of cotton. This is the fabric used for our Lou Gardian work pants. With a weight of 400 g/m², this type of moleskin is relatively light. It is the "mole skin" described by Marquis Folco de Baroncelli Javon.

Gardian pants in heavy cotton and polyester moleskin

Gardian pants in heavy moleskin

67% cotton - 33% polyester

Heavy moleskin (420 g/m²) is made of 67% cotton and 33% polyester. Although cotton remains the dominant fiber in the fabric, the addition of polyester gives the material significant extra resistance. It also provides better color fastness against UV rays, very present in Camargue.

Gardian pants in stretch moleskin cotton and elastane

Camargue pants in stretch moleskin

98% cotton - 2% elastane

Much more flexible than our other moleskins, stretch moleskin is made of 98% cotton and 2% elastane. This lightweight fabric gives the gardian pants elasticity, greatly improving comfort during wide and repeated movements.
